Call for the 2025 Dossier: Florestan Fernandes' Thought Remains Alive!
The journal Especiaria: Notebooks of Human Sciences from the State University of Santa Cruz (UESC) presents this Dossier to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the passing of Florestan Fernandes.
Florestan Fernandes (1920-1995), a renowned intellectual and patron of Brazilian sociology, delved deeply into social reality to extract the roots of economic, social, political, and cultural inequalities. The originality of his interpretations, present in his works, and his fierce activism in the defense of democracy and social rights reveal the strength of his scientific, historical, political, and philosophical convictions.
His sense of justice, consistent with his background, led him to remain faithful to his social class and to contribute to the historical recovery of Brazilian indigenous organization, which has been plundered by colonial, neocolonial, and imperialist exploitation. This same sense also drove him to critique the myth of “racial democracy” and fight for equal rights. With fearless attitudes, Florestan championed the unconditional defense of a high-quality public education system and understood the necessity of a Brazilian revolution as a means to achieve true economic and cultural democracy.
In this dossier, we aim to publish studies that engage with Florestan Fernandes’ thought and update the debate through themes such as: dependent capitalism; social inequality; social classes and class struggle; race and class; democracy; racism; education and educational dilemmas; childhood; social and political rights; Brazilian revolution, among others.
