Abstract

Beyond their poetic and subjective character, photographs also serve a historical and political function, making visible transitions, changes, and transformations. In this sense, the article proposes a detailed semiotic analysis of two photographs by the Yoruba artist Rotimi Fani-Kayode in order to discuss the reified Yoruba presence in the Atlantic and how this Yoruban identity is invoked as an aesthetic resource in his images. To this end, I use as a tool the semiotic analysis of two photographs by the Yoruba artist, chosen to highlight this Atlantic relationship, and two photographs by the Afro-Brazilian multi-artist Ayrson Heráclito to crystallize the dialogue between the two Atlantic shores, Nigeria and Bahia.
