Abstract

Irony is a figure of rhetoric summarized as a way of expressing oneself with the opposite to what one is thinking. From the perspective of Rhetoric, the resource works as an argumentative device – through it, it is possible to argue indirectly. Based on these considerations, this article aims to show the functioning of irony in Rubem chronicles that approach the figure of the woman, based on the hypothesis that this figure is one of the rhetorical resources that the author frequently uses to show himself convincing and persuade your audience. The theoretical assumptions underlying the analysis come from rhetoric, specifically from New Rhetoric researchers who approach the mechanism, such as Paiva (1961), Tringali (1988), Reboul (2004), Fiorin (2014) and Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca (2020). The examination of the data takes into account the analysis of excerpts that allow an understanding of irony.
