Abstract

This academic paper explores the importance of translation in the context of international relations, focusing on the controversial United Nations Security Council Resolution 242, adopted in 1967, during the conflict between Israel and Arab countries. The resolution, aimed at achieving peace in the region, faced difficulties of interpretation due to its translation into French and English, generating ambiguities that worsened the territorial dispute. The theoretical analysis covers language and translation theories, emphasizing the significance of accurate translations to avoid tensions in international settings. The case of Resolution 242 highlights how different political interpretations can arise from translations and how political discourse is influenced by these versions. Additionally, the article underscores the complexity of multilingual diplomacy at the UN, in which clarity in translations is essential to promote peaceful relations between nations. In conclusion, translation plays a fundamental role in communication and mutual understanding among states, and a careful approach is crucial to avoid misunderstandings and ensure the proper application of international law, always seeking a just and lasting peace on the global stage.
