EL HERMANAMIENTO DEL CAMINO DE BROCHERO (ARGENTINA) CON EL DE SANTIAGO (ESPAÑA). PATRIMONIO Y TURISTIFICACIÓN SOBRE LA RUTA DE DOS SANTOS.

Abstract

The “Camino de Brochero” (Argentina) is a 240-kilometer route that connects three central points in the biography of the priest José Brochero [1840-1914], canonized in 2016. The “Camino de Santiago” (Spain), with an antiquity more than a millennium and an average distance of 800 km, it is one of the most important pilgrimage routes in the world. Declared a world patrimony site by UNESCO, it currently receives thousands of people per year. In February 2023, both roads were twinned through a state agreement. The objective of this agreement on the Argentine side is to strengthen religious tourism and give international projection to the Brocherian path.

Based on the ethnographic fieldwork that we are carrying out on the Brocherian movement in contemporary Argentina, within the framework of a research agenda anchored in social anthropology, fundamentally involving the techniques of participant observation and conducting semi-structured interviews with different actors in the group, in this work we reflect on the heritage processes deployed by state organizations and the promotion of this heritage as an axis of economic development through religious tourism.
