Abstract

The aim of this paper is to understand the conditions that favor or hinder the development of tourism activities in Guinea-Bissau. SWOT analysis was used to identify the strengths and opportunities, as well as the weaknesses and limiting factors for national tourism. Initially, it was necessary to identify the main aspects that have marked the country's recent history, the geographical aspects and socioeconomic conditions of the population. The array of strengths and weaknesses and opportunities and threats were fed with information gathered through statements from representatives of government institutions related to tourism in that country. It was observed that the nation have been trying to structure itself, on the one hand, after several military coups and civil wars and, on the other hand, as a multicultural cradle represented by various ethnic groups and colonial legacy. This work allows reflection on the possibilities of ensuring a competitive destination for the country in the international tourism market, arousing the government attention to open new markets and attract new investors and ensuring for the population better living conditions through the development of the sustainable tourist activity.
