THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTH EDUCATION IN THE MANAGEMENT OF VISCERAL LEISHMANIASIS IN THE CONTEXT OF PRIMARY CARE

The present research reports the experience of six nursing students from the Universidade Estadual Vale do
Acaraú (UVA) in an extension activity focused on raising awareness about Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL), also
known as kala-azar. The activity took place at the Central Market of Sobral, Ceará, with the aim of informing
the population about the risks and complications of the disease, covering symptoms, transmission, diagnosis,
treatment, and prevention. Educational methodologies were used to ensure better understanding among the
attendees. The results showed that the citizens had little knowledge about this pathology.
In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of health education in the control of neglected diseases
and proposes the continuation of educational activities to raise awareness among the population and improve
public health indicators.

Programa UESC e comunidade vizinha do Salobrinho

This article is a case study that aims to describe the extension action of the State University of Santa Cruz (UESC) in partnership with the Salobrinho Neighborhood Community in the municipality of Ilhéus-Ba, having as the study area the aforementioned neighborhood, where the university is based. The period studied is two years and goes from the launch of the program in 2017 to the year 2018, the year of completion of the activities of the first edition of the program. The methodology adopted is the case study. The main objective is to describe the program and its impacts on social transformation, practice and social actions. It was concluded that the UESC and neighboring community of Salobrinho Program is presented as a success story of UESC university extension and its integration with the surrounding community with the purpose of promoting social transformation through positive results obtained in the program.

Teaching resources as facilators in the dissemination of knowledge on biodiversity conservation: a case study with the bromeliaceae juss family

Bromeliaceae is the largest Neotropical family. A significant portion of the individuals from this family is classified under various risk categories due to extractivism and deforestation, endangering not only the bromeliads but also a wide range of animal and plant species that rely on them throughout their life cycle. One way to approach environmental awareness and promote environmental education is by using didactic resources in extension activities. Didactic resources were created and/or utilized in this study aiming to subsidize and dynamize environmental education activities in extension actions in the municipality of Seropédica. A didactic model, the board game “Caminho das Bromélias,” an informative leaflet, and a series of videos published on the social media channels of the UFRRJ Botanical Garden were created. These didactic resources were presented at the extension events, engaging approximately four hundred participants from the “Baixada Fluminense” region, particularly students from basic education in the municipality of Seropédica. The use of these didactic resources was positively received by the students, as they stimulated their interest in the topic in a motivating and playful way. The results highlighted the importance of extension actions in the construction and dissemination of knowledge about environmental education to society.

Bibliotherapy in the hemodialysis center:

The present work discusses reading practices and their therapeutic impact on the health of patients in hemodialysis treatment. The strategy of care through literary texts, bibliotherapy, can improve the quality of life of the patient, as well as promote a welcoming and interactive environment. This is an experience report of the extension project "Ler faz bem à saúde", from the Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz, developed in a hemodialysis center. The look on the health of patients in hemodialysis therapy, through alternative and adjuvant practices, becomes a contribution to the improvement of emotional and, consequently, physical well-being of patients. The skills for life indicated by WHO are assumed as basic themes to encourage the mediation of reading literary texts. It unites the opportunity to promote the development of such skills to the potential of literature as a cultural tool for reinventing oneself and the surrounding world. These reading practices promote an environment conducive to self-acceptance and the reception of others. It results, therefore, in contact with other ways of thinking that can re-signify the moment of pain and suffering, inspiring resilience and search for maintenance of life.

Arborização no contexto da Educação Ambiental

O presente trabalho apresenta os resultados de um conjunto de atividades de extensão universitária desenvolvido no âmbito do Projeto Convivas: Matemáticas e suas Tecnologias, promovido por estudantes de graduação da Faculdade de Tecnologia da UNICAMP e coordenado por professoras, em parceria o Aldeia: Movimento Pró-Cultura, uma organização não governamental. O objetivo das atividades foi despertar o interesse e ampliar a percepção das crianças para a importância da arborização urbana para a qualidade de vida e para a preservação ambiental. A metodologia empregada envolveu oficinas interativas e a utilização de espaços abertos como ambiente das oficinas. A proposta favoreceu experiências sensoriais, comparação entre paisagens diferentes, discussões coletivas e reflexões em rodas de conversa. Como atividade final, as crianças construíram maquetes expressando suas. Os resultados indicaram um envolvimento significativo das crianças, bem como dos estudantes universitários, condutores das atividades. O trabalho demonstra o potencial das oficinas como estratégia pedagógica para a sensibilização ambiental e para a compreensão da arborização urbana como um elemento importante para qualidade de vida de uma população.

EDUCATIONAL SPACES AND INTERACTIONS IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION – A CASE STUDY IN A BRAZILIAN PUBLIC SCHOOL

This paper reports on a series of environmental-education initiatives implemented at a public school in Salobrinho, Ilhéus (Bahia, Brazil) between 2023 and 2024. Centered on the region’s water systems and the sustainable use of hydric resources, the project integrated Natural-Science and Mathematics curricula and relied on students’ environmental perceptions to foster critical, collaborative learning in the lower-secondary grades. We also examined how strategies drawn from Social Communication can deepen environmental awareness in school settings. Activities – including the establishment of a vegetable garden, waste sorting, materials reuse, and water-conservation measures – engaged pupils, teachers, and technical staff, thereby bridging theory and practice. The school garden not only supplemented the students’ diets but also encouraged active participation through sowing, cultivation, and harvesting. Communication and Pedagogy formed the project’s twin pillars: creative campaigns and informational materials disseminated via digital and print media strengthened dialogue on sustainability. These actions prompted reflection on water waste and scarcity and highlighted the transformative potential of collective engagement within the school environment.

Educação e Sustentabilidade: a Química Ambiental como interface de diálogo entre escola e sociedade

The present work presents an extension initiative aimed at promoting public science communication and socio-environmental awareness within the community of Itabuna (BA). The initiative integrated teaching and extension through the organization of a public exhibition in reference to World Environment Day, held at Jequitibá Plaza Shopping, with the participation of students from the final years of Elementary School and High School at a private institution. The central goal was to bring scientific knowledge closer to society, fostering student protagonism and dialogue with the community. The project was structured in four stages: defining the themes and participating classes; introducing the content in classroom; developing guided research; and producing and presenting the exhibition materials. The students’ creations focused on waste reuse and biogas production, incorporating interactive resources and tangible materials. Significant student engagement and positive visitor reception were observed, demonstrating the effectiveness of a practical and interdisciplinary approach in promoting environmental sensitization and scientific dissemination. It is concluded that extension activities grounded in active methodologies and integration of science, education, and society, are effective strategies for the popularization of science and the promotion of sustainable practices.
